Isn’t rain the most familiar extraordinary thing to human beings?
This extraordinary life has given birth to a number of dramas and ripples in people’s minds in various forms, such as novels and paintings.
For Japanese people, the painting by Utagawa Hiroshige, known to be very familiar in textbooks and other media, is the most famous of all. Did you know that this work, which is also known as the world’s first painting to depict the rain in lines, was copied by Van Gogh? (There are some theories) Until then, rain had been depicted in paintings by the reflection of light from umbrellas and wet ground. However, the shape of rain around the world has been updated since “The Great Leap Forward” crossed the sea.
In this article, I would like to introduce several artists who are seeking a new expression of rain that replaces the famous painting “The Big Ash Wednesday Evening” painted over 150 years ago.
